1) What is text messaging? How do I know if I can send text messages? Text messaging is a way to communicate on your mobile phone by sending and receiving plain text messages. Other terms for text messaging include SMS (which stands for Short Message Service), texting, mobile messaging, wireless messaging, and short mail.
To determine if you can send text messages, contact your wireless service provider or reference your mobile phone's manual. The text messaging service is typically found on your mobile phone menu under 'Messages.' After selecting 'Messaging,' if you have an option to 'Send' or 'Create' a message, this is typically how you would begin the process of sending a text message. The type of message you would create or send is a 'short message,' 'text message,' or 'message.'
2) Is text messaging the same as email? Technically, they are not the same. However, they are very similar, and many mobile devices can send and receive both.
3) Who can I send an SMS or text messages to? In the U.S., you can send an SMS or text message to any other mobile phone user by addressing the message to their mobile phone number.
Additionally, you can send messages to participate in polls, voting, games and a variety of other exciting mobile applications by addressing your SMS or text message to a short code. Look for short codes on product packaging and in TV and print advertising.
4) What kind of phone do I need to send SMS or text messages? Nearly every new mobile phone allows you to send and receive SMS or text messages, and this information will be presented to you as part of the phone's capabilities when you make your purchase. For older phones, it is best to contact your wireless service provider if you are not sure, and they can either explain how to send and read messages or provide you with details on upgrading to a phone with these capabilities. NA supports SMS messaging from all mobile phones from AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, T- Mobile, Alltel, US Cellular, Cellular One, Sprint, Nextel, Boost Mobile, etc.
5) How does SMS or text messaging work? SMS or text messaging is a text-only message delivery system on mobile phone networks. As a complement to voice calls, text messages travel through the wireless service provider's network, routed and delivered much like a voice call. The messaging server for SMS or text messaging routes all messages to the appropriate mobile phone or application based on the number in the destination address.
6) How much does it cost to send and receive an SMS? This depends on your wireless provider's service plans. Most plans come with some sort of bucket, such as 200-300 SMS messages, for an additional monthly charge of $5-$10. When SMS messaging is not included in service plans, most carriers charge users between $.05 and $.10 per message.
7) What is a short code? A short code is a number to which an SMS or text message can be sent. A short code is fewer digits than a 10-digit telephone number. For example, a short code could be 54321.
8) What is a common short code? A common short code, or CSC, is a short code that is common across all wireless service providers in the U.S. The Common Short Code Administrator (CSCA) assigns CSCs to applicants allowing them to be used for the same application across multiple wireless service providers.
9) What are INgage Networks' short codes? INgage Networks owns two short codes: 77812 and 247365. Standard/Other message charges may apply. These short codes will work on the following mobile networks: AT&T Mobility (Orange/Blue), T-Mobile ™, Verizon, Sprint Nextel, Boost Mobile, Dobson Cellular (Cellular One), Alltel, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile.
10) Do common short codes work with all wireless service providers? Not necessarily. All wireless service providers will have the option of supporting (i.e. carrying traffic to and from the content provider that leases the CSC) each common short code and its associated application. The decision of whether or not to support a common short code is left to the sole discretion of each wireless service provider.
11) What is IVR? Interactive Voice Response is a technology that automates interaction with telephone callers. NA utilizes IVR for text to speech conversion, to provide voice information, and to capture caller ID to send an SMS message with information to an interested caller.
12) How do you terminate or 'Opt Out' of a campaign? A person can opt out or terminate a campaign by sending an SMS with keyword S, Stop, End, Quit, Cancel, or Unsubscribe to any of INgage Networks customer's short codes.
Once the person sends a stop message they will not receive any other text message from that short code unless they opt back in.
13) Are there any hidden fees or premium charges? Occasionally, customers will offer PSMS campaigns which will include additional messaging charges on their phone bills. These types of services will be covered in the MOVO Terms and Conditions page of the website.
14) Whats the difference between Canadian Short code programs versus the US? Canadian Short Code programs are similar to the US except short codes are issued by the CWTA (Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association). Also, SMS campaigns in Canada are limited to 139 Characters. Our character counter takes this into consideration when launching a Canadian SMS campaign.
15) What is MOVO’s Canadian Short code? Our Canadian short code is 28867. What carriers does this short code work on? Alliant Mobility, Bell Mobility, Fido, MTS, NorthernTel Mobility, Rogers Wireless, SaskTel Mobility, Telebec Mobilite, Telus Mobility, Virgin Mobile Canada.
16) How do mobile marketing campaigns in Canada work? Like in the US, Consumers will see a call to action in traditional advertising encouraging them to opt-in by texting a keyword to the short code. For example in the Automotive industry, a user will opt-in to receive information alerts about car dealership promotions, service specials and updates, and be able to check pricing and inventory for a specific car. This program will be standard rate messaging and most of the time have a 1:1 ratio of MO’s versus MT’s. Occasionally the auto dealerships will send out broadcast alerts to opted-in subscribers to alert them of service notifications such as oil changes, and their cars are now ready for pick up.
17) What are the message rates in Canada? All MOVO Canadian SMS campaigns are Standard Message Rates which mean the end user pays their normal text rates that are included in their mobile phone plans. MOVO does not do PSMS campaigns in Canada at this time. In Canada you can text HELP, H, or AIDE to 28867 to get campaign and support information. To opt out a user can text S, Stop, Quit, or Arret.
